Professional Skills for Government

About PSG

PSG provides a clear framework for developing your career and ensures that everyone has the right skills and experience needed to do their job well.

Fast Streamers should aim to get a broad experience of government work, including essential operational delivery experience. This is particularly important since, from 2012, all new entrants and aspirants to the SCS will need to have broader experience.

For promotion to Grade 7 and the SCS

For promotion to Grade 7 Fast Streamers must develop leadership skills and broader experience, as well as Core Skills in:

  • Analysis and Use of Evidence
  • Finance
  • Programme and Project Management
  • People Management

Professional expertise is also essential, and in order to achieve this, you will need to meet the professional standards required of your role. These standards are set by the relevant Head of Profession.

As someone aspiring to the SCS, you will also need to develop further Core Skills in:

  • Communications and Marketing
  • Strategic Thinking

The National School runs programmes for all the above, to help develop the professional expertise needed for promotion to Grade 7 and the SCS.
