About the Core Learning Programme
A series of workshops for leaders around the Government priority of Achieving More With Less is part of the Core Learning Programme. The Core Learning Programme is a programme of essential learning unique to the Civil Service, designed to accelerate the transformation of public services. The leadership of the Civil Service commissioned it to give managers and leaders the skills and knowledge for it to perform better and meet the mammoth challenges it faces.More about the Core Learning Programme including its programmes.
About the workshops
There are three workshops which have the common theme of helping you find new ways to produce results with tighter budgets. They can be taken individually or all together and if you do decide to attend all three, you can do so in any order. You'll share good practice and get the tools and techniques to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviour vital for ensuring your organisation and teams perform and achieve in tough times. To go the web page for each of the three workshops, click on its links below:

- Spending, Commissioning and Sourcing Decisions
Who they are for
For senior leaders at Deputy Director and SCS level faced with the challenge of delivering results with less budget. The same series of workshops is also running for practitioners at grade 6/7 level. Find out more. Having two versions of the workshops for different job roles allows the discussion and learning to be more focussed and relevant to the needs of the group.
Learn from people who have lived it
Across the public, voluntary and private sectors there are people who when faced with seemingly impossible choices, have had to make the tough decisions that impact on services. It is these people who are speaking at and providing the case studies for the workshops. Whether you attend one or all three, it's your opportunity to find out what they did, what happened afterwards, and more importantly, how to apply the lessons to your own situation.
Apply the lessons
The case studies used in the workshops provide plenty of inspiration and cover a host of lessons such as:- Making decisions when all the choices are painful.
- Standing fast against chaos when it threatens to overwhelm you.
- What happens when the sales propelling your healthy revenue-generating business dry up overnight?
- How partnerships and communication can stop problems turning into disasters
- Breaking free of the same old tram tracks and finding new ways of doing things that work better and cost less.
- Stopping the system from sabotaging your best intentions.
- Why aren't we working efficiently anyway? The obstacles and how to overcome them.
- The crucial importance of mindset.
- What's trust got to do with it?
- Seeing clearly when you're in the thick of it.
Workshop aims
- To increase understanding of how to implement difficult changes within your organisation and in your delivery system, with learning from other practitioners studies.
- To build confidence to lead in new ways.
- To offer resources and networks to help leaders to continue to develop the capabilities they and their people will need.
