In partnership with the Ministry of Defence’s dblearning and supported by a growing syndicate of departments, we are producing a massive e-learning programme entitled Understanding the Civil Service. The programme includes modules on:

  • Induction to the Civil Service
  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Serving the Public
  • Serving Ministers
  • Serving Parliament
  • Policy and Strategy
  • The European Union
  • The Wider Civil Service
  • Ethics & the Civil Service Code

  • It can be used as formal e-learning and there are tests at various points throughout each module, but it is primarily a resource of knowledge and advice that you can tap into. If you don't know the difference between a Select Committee and a Standing Committee, don't know how to reply to a letter from an MP or don't really understand what's special about being a civil servant, the answers are all here.

Arrangements for this e-programme to be available to staff have been made with the following departments and their agencies and you should be able to access it on their departmental intranets or on the National School website. If your department has supported it, please use the facility.
