Guidance for study time off

In accepting a place on the Foundation Degree in Government both the line manager and the student are undertaking a commitment to learning which will be reflected in the approach to work and development as well as making some time available - both in and out of work.

Students will need opportunities to do work which relates to each of the modules and they will need to approach the work in a way that allows them to reflect on that work and keep notes and examples for their assignments.

The student - with help from their line manager, mentor and tutor - is responsible for identifying suitable opportunities at work for them to use for each module. One thing to take into account and discuss with their line manager will be any time off the job they need. If they need to be training, this should usually be seen as a regular part of the job rather than time off for study.

The student will need to negotiate appropriate time to do the work necessary for the programme. The actual time needed will vary depending on the individual circumstances, students may need a little more time for the first few modules while they become familiar with the way of working on work based qualifications. Below are the elements of the work and some suggestions of what the time implications might be to help students and line managers agree how much time is needed. It is expected that some of tasks which are not part of normal working will be done in the student's own time, depending on what the department has agreed.
