Senior Policy Makers Seminar. Ethics in Policy Delivery 18-19 January 2007, Oxford
The National School team's up with Oxford University's Department for Continuing Education. The result is a series of seminars in policy making and delivery, using cross-cutting issue themes. Collaborating with Oxford University has enabled policy makers to come into direct contact with academics in the field. giving them opportunity to discuss how they can best combine their strengths to tackle complex areas of policy delivery.
Two successful seminars have already taken place on the themes of migration and ageing. The seminars offer senior officials the opportunity to take a step back from day-to-day pressures and allow them to consider ways to improve policy making using a live and relevant issue that has an impact across all of government. Participants come away with a number of ideas about how they might apply lessons learnt to their own responsibilities.

AUES lunchtime seminars for SCS
As part of the AUES lunchtime seminar series, on 19 July, Jon Moon, Consultant and Visiting Lecturer at Manchester and Cranfield Business Schools, delivered a fast-paced and lively seminar, on Presenting Information, to an audience of Senior Civil Servants. The informative seminar was packed full of interesting and highly relevant hints and tips for ensuring that written reports and briefs are clear and persuasive. From tips on typography, to guidance on better graphing, Jon Moon had valuable advice for all participants and persuaded many of those present to rush back to the office instantly to add some final flourishes to current drafts.
Jon managed to cover a huge array of points in a relatively short time without losing his audience or the sense of his arguments. He waged war on the pointlessness of the pie chart in most contexts. He managed to clarify the difference between the ability to add a vast range of formatting to documents and the usefulness of much of that formatting. He had a great deal to say about the style and content of tables and how they can be used, even when most authors would tend to opt for block text, to ensure that relevant information leaps out at the reader. All in all, a well-spent working lunch!
At the next lunchtime seminar on 20 September, Rupert Lewis, Office of Science and Technology, will talk about horizon scanning.
