What We Do - Strategic Capability

With the public sector becoming increasingly complex, it needs flexible leaders and staff to deal with current and future challenges, together with a clear line of sight as to what's needed to build better performance.

Public servants increasingly have to work across organisational boundaries, across different levels of Government and different sectors to meet challenges such as migration, security threats and climate change. The themes of the 30 Public Service Agreements (PSAs) which Government is collectively working towards demands that organisations have to work in these new ways.

Drawing on the Fellows of the Sunningdale Institute, and faculty staff with experience across Government, the National School works with organisations to ensure they have the necessary capability to work in the ways required.

Where we can help you

We can help your organisation identify and clear the hurdles to successful performance on such overarching issues as:

  • creating a performance climate
  • creating momentum for successful change
  • having a top team that operates collectively and strategically
  • having a common mindset with a shared purpose among leaders and staff
  • having an integrated, aligned approach to deliver the strategy
  • translating corporate objectives into action
  • how to work more effectively through delivery arms

Our approach

As an organisation working at the centre of Government, we work with the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit and Strategy Unit and the Civil Service Capability Group within the Cabinet Office to take forward and create momentum for development issues around public sector reform and to support organisational capability building. We understand the Civil Service environment and can dig beneath the surface to unearth the real issues as to what's happening and why. Our recommendations are pragmatic and founded in best practice.

The benefits to your organisation

The benefits are straightforward and highly visible. Our interventions can get your organisation and people out of behavioural tram tracks and direct you to better ways of working. The results of this range from small changes that deliver incremental results to a transformation in organisation performance, efficiency and capability.

For further information

We would very much welcome the opportunity to work with you. For a no-cost, no-obligation initial conversation we would be delighted to hear from you.
