On 23 February 2010, The Work Foundation published a report which explores the economic challenges facing the UK over the next decade. It assesses how the UK can respond to these challenges by generating economic growth and employment and demonstrates how England’s eight core cities and their city regions can play a critical role in driving this growth.
The report emphasises that England’s core cities – Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield – and their city regions underpin England’s economy.
It considers three possible futures for jobs and economic output in the core cities and their city regions, examining the worst case, medium and best case scenarios for levels of investment, infrastructure, sustainability and skills in local labour markets. This provides three different outcomes for jobs and economic growth over the next decade.
The report subsequently sets out what is needed to ensure the UK, its core cities and their city regions achieve the best case scenario and avoid a return to urban decline or jobless growth for a decade to come.
