A report from the Work Foundation, published on 19 April 2010, shows that the shift towards low carbon ways of working is increasingly associated with the creation of a broad range of new employment opportunities.
A central theme of the Work Foundation’s 2020 knowledge economy research programme has been the development of an understanding of the likely nature of the knowledge based industrial structure of the UK in 2020.
This paper considers the potential for the low carbon economy to form a major part of such an industrial structure. It explores the topic through scenario-based analysis to map what can be said with confidence about the future scale and nature of employment generated by a low carbon economy. Opportunities stemming from a low carbon economy are evident from the analysis, but so is the need for strong public support for the development of these activities.
