A report published on 2 April 2010 by the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) details how and why local authorities should be given responsibility for local support for the unemployed, local provision of all non-NHS care, local prevention of crime and anti-social behaviour and the rehabilitation of local criminals.
The report illustrates how ending multiple overlaps between central and local government can serve to improve public services whilst at the same time saving £14 billion a year nationally.
It insists that local councils can serve their citizens in a more responsive and less bureaucratic way than central government by setting priorities and implementing local policies which would be difficult to undertake at a national level.
