On the 4th February 2009 Sciencewise-ERC will be launching its first online ‘master class’ for dialogue, featuring high profile science communicator and broadcaster Kathy Sykes along with other dialogue engagement specialists, who will share their expert knowledge and experience in the field of dialogue.
This online ‘master class’ takes the form of a web based seminar or workshop, offering delegates the opportunity to log in and attend the event from their preferred location. Delegates will be given the chance to interact in the webcast, asking live questions and receiving a step-by-step guide to engaging in better public dialogue. Live poll questions will be asked on hot topics of the moment and the results of these will be shared with the audience. The interactive nature of the live webcast will present delegates with the chance to receive support in the areas of public dialogue and engagement in a format that Sciencewise-ERC has not previously offered.
Sciencewise-ERC is funded by DIUS (Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills) and helps policy makers commission and use public dialogue to inform decisions and policy making in emerging areas of science and technology. Co-funding is also provided by Sciencewise-ERC for government departments and agencies to conduct dialogue projects, which are linked to live policy issues. Sciencewise-ERC aims to help engage the public about the potential impacts of science and technology developments.

Sciencewise Expert Resource Centre for Public Dialogue in Science and Innovation
The popular initiative by the Sciencewise Expert Resource Centre (Sciencewise-ERC)– Drop in for Dialogue – continues to be welcomed by policy makers across government who have attended sessions aimed at spreading the message about public dialogue.
Sciencewise-ERC, which is funded by DIUS, holds the monthly Drop in for Dialogue sessions at Future Focus in the department for Business and Regulatory Reform (BERR) at 1 Victoria Street, from 12 noon to 2.30pm, including lunch. One or both sessions can be booked.
Guest speakers have included Helen Richens of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), and Diane Warburton, a consultant on public and community participation, who have shared their experiences about the benefit of public dialogue when formulating national policy.
Talks are followed by question and answer sessions, when policy makers can glean more information. One-to-one mentoring is also available, which can be pre-booked.
Positive feedback from policy makers has included comments such as: “It was useful to meet individuals working in a similar field to me”, and “We are trying to build public engagement capability into our curriculum and the model and experience offered…was really helpful.”
