This section was created in 2000 as a snapshot of some initiatives across government which encourage the use of evidence in policy-making. It has not been updated and some links may now be out of date.

Follow the hyperlinks in the table below to view information under five characteristics of initiatives which encourage the use of evidence.

1. Gathers evidence for wider dissemination
An initiative that gathers evidence or collects information from a range of sources and stores it one easily accessible place.

2. Provides access to sources of evidence
An initiative that provides access to sources of evidence may, for example, refer/link individuals to reports or conference proceedings.

3. Encourages knowledge sharing
An initiative that encourages knowledge sharing such as a discussion forum where a variety of ideas and perspectives can be presented.

4. Encourages good practice
An initiative that encourages good practice by drawing on knowledge and experience to influence ways of working.

5. Supplies links to evidence providers
An initiative that supplies links to evidence providers could, for example, refer/link individuals to appropriate people or organisations
