Carbon Dioxide emissions and food supply

Reducing Carbon Dioxide emissions in food systems essential to meet targets for reductions in greenhouse gases.

Transport 2000 published a report on 6 November 2003 (Wise moves: exploring the relationship between food, transport and carbon dioxide). The report, which presents the results of a project, carried out jointly with the food industry and government departments, highlights the carbon dioxide emissions related to transporting food within the UK. In addition, there is an environmental cost in transporting food to the UK (a net importer of food), particularly to meet the out-of-season demand. It may be less environmentally damaging to import out-of-season foods than to produce them in hot houses in UK, but consumers should help by eating foods which are suited to UK growing conditions in their proper season.
