Citizenship education at school in Europe

In June 2005, Eurydice published a report (Citizenship education at school in Europe). This study considers the contribution made by education in 30 European countries to developing responsible citizens. How is the concept of 'responsible citizenship' defined in national education policies? What aims are pursued and what content and approaches used for citizenship education in curricula for primary and general secondary education? How are pupils prepared for their role as responsible European and world citizens? How do schools encourage participation by pupils in the life of the school and local community? How does the evaluation of schools take such action into account? How are pupils assessed? How are teachers trained to educate pupils for citizenship?

The report can be viewed on the Eurydice website
