Community Support Officers (CSOs) detention power pilot results

On 23 December 2004, the Home Office published a report (Community Support Officer (detention power pilot): evaluation results) which shows that the general public have a high level of satisfaction with the work of CSOs.

Some of the evaluation's main findings include:

• highly visible presence;
• their presence has a positive impact on public perceptions of safety;
• accepted by police officers that work closely with them; and,
• diverse backgrouds of CSOs with 17 per cent from ethnic minorities and 39 per cent are women.

The Home Secretary set targets of 132,500 police officers in 2004 and 4,000 CSOs by the end of 2005. Both targets have been exceeded well ahead of the target dates.
