On 5 September 2006, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) published a report (Life expectancy and disability in Australia 1988 to 2003) which says that life expectancy has increased markedly over the last century. This report explores the question whether the number of years lived with illness or disability has fallen or risen as overall life expectancy has lengthened, focusing on years lived with disability. The report updates previous estimates of 'health expectancies' in Australia and examines the changes over a period of 15 years, from 1988 to 2003.
