On 4 January 2006, the Department for Education and Skills published a report (2020 vision: report of the Teaching and Learning in 2020 Review) which presents a vision for personalising teaching and learning for children and young people aged 5-16. It has drawn upon a wide range of evidence and practice, and makes recommendations about what changes to the school system should be considered in order to make its vision of what schools will look like in 2020 a reality.
The report considers ways to improve and sustain the rate of pupil progress, strategies to enhance teachers’ skills and share best practice, and how to engage pupils and parents in the learning process. It calls for action to stop boys and children from poor families falling behind in class, with state funding for children to receive extra private tuition if they are struggling with English and maths. The report also looks at ways in which flexibilities in the curriculum might support personalised learning, and how to establish a better system of innovation in teaching and learning in schools. Traditional grades could be replaced by teacher "feedback", while pupils would help to set their own objectives in an attempt to replace a 'one size fits all' approach to teaching.
