On 28 October 2008, the Sutton Trust published a report (Increasing higher education participation amongst disadvantaged young people and schools in poor communities) which sets out a series of policy recommendations intended to raise the proportion of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who enter higher education.
The focus of the report is on increasing the numbers of young students, particularly those aged 18 or 19, who enter university-level study. The report also outlines a vision on the wider issue of lifelong learning for those who may take time out of education before returning at a later date.
Although there are many barriers to entering higher education and many groups who are disadvantaged, this report looks principally at inequalities by socio-economic class, income and school type.
