Increased employer investment in health is key to combating public health crisis

A Social Market Foundation (SMF) publication (Whose Responsibility is it Anyway? Perspectives on public health, the state and the individual), released on 25 October 2004, argues that employers could hold the key to improving the nation's health if they take their responsibilities towards their employees seriously.

Michael Hall's essay argues that UK employers are promoting health to their staff at levels which leave them trailing behind their European neighbours. 50% of businesses do not provide any occupational health services for their staff even though sickness absence cost businesses £11.6bn in 2003. Other contributors include Rt Hon John Reid MP, Secretary of State for Health; Claire Fox, Director of the Institute for Ideas; Nick Doyle from the Health Development Agency; and Adrian Harvey from CABE.
