On 28 November 2007, the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement ( IEA) published a report (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2006: highlights from Scotland's results) which finds that Scotland's reading literacy is still significantly above the international average. However, 19 out of the 45 countries/regions had significantly higher mean scores than Scotland compared with 12 out of 35 in 2001.
The Progress In Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is run by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement every five years. Scotland also took part in the first cycle of the study in 2001.
This is the first of three studies which measure educational performance in Scotland at an international level. PIRLS measures the reading literacy achievement of nine and ten year-old pupils (P5 in Scotland) and gathers information about school and home factors associated with learning to read.
