Increase in long hours at work

A survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (Living to Work) published on 9 October 2003 has found that the number of employees who now work more than 48 hours a week, has grown to one in four. One in four also report stress or depression and many claim that long hours have put their relationships and health under strain. The Government's campaign on work-life balance has had little or no effect to date. However, almost 1 in 4 employees have cut back their hours in the past 5 years.

A summary of the survey can be found on the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development website.
