NHS next stage review

On 13 January 2009, the House of Commons Health Committee published a report (NHS next stage review) which looks at the findings and recommendations of the Department of Health’s review on the future of the NHS, High quality care for all: NHS next stage review - http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/publicationsandstatistics/publications/publicationspolicyandguidance/DH_085825

The Health Committee took evidence from a wide range of witnesses including academics, representatives of Royal Colleges and NHS managers, the British Medical Association, chief executives of Strategic Health Authorities and the authors of the Next Stage Review (NSR).

The report describes the main proposals contained in the NSR and details witnesses' responses to them.

It outlines the process leading up to the publication of the NSR and looks in general terms at witnesses' concerns in relation to some of the proposals, in particular whether they are likely to be implemented successfully. The report also addresses the most significant recommendations emerging from the NSR, examining the Department of Health's proposals to:
