Empowering engagement: a stronger voice for older people

On 3 February 2008, the Department for Work and Pensions published the UK government’s response to John Elbourne's Independent review of older people's engagement with government.

The John Elbourne review examined the current arrangements for the engagement of older people and the ability of these arrangements to inform policy and the actions of government at all levels.

This report sets out the government’s response to John Elbourne’s report and proposes an action plan to improve the quality of life for older people.

The government’s proposals include:

• developing a UK advisory forum on ageing to provide guidance on cross-government policy development for older people;
• establishing or developing regional forums on ageing;
• setting up processes to ensure the views of older people at a local level are systematically captured to inform government at all levels;
• providing guidelines for the strategic engagement of older people for the benefit of local authorities and other organisations.
