On 3 November 2008, the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit published a discussion paper (Getting on, getting ahead) which analyses the evidence base on social mobility.
The paper looks at trends and drivers of social mobility and finds that it has remained broadly stable since 1970. Evidence since 2000 suggests social mobility may start to rise in the future.
The report identifies four key areas where it believes the government can achieve the most significant impact in terms of improving social mobility
