On 24 March 2009, the UK government published the UK's strategy for tackling international terrorism. The document aims to reduce the risk to the United Kingdom and its interests overseas, ensuring that people can go about their lives freely and with confidence.
The first part of the document sets out how the terrorist threat to the UK has evolved, the present threat, the factors which are shaping it and the government’s assumptions about how it may develop in future.
The second part of the document details the principles which govern the strategy. They include a commitment to human rights and the rule of law as well as an emphasis on the need to address the causes as well as the symptoms of international terrorism. The four main workstreams of the strategy – pursue, prevent, protect and prepare - are also described.
The remainder of the document explains who will deliver the strategy and how the government will measure its impact. It concludes with a section explaining the important role communications play in the overall counterterrorism strategy.
