Successful Delivery Skills Programme

The Office of Government Commerce has announced a new initiative to raise the level of project delivery skills in Central Government.

The Successful Delivery Skills Programme (SDSP) aims to provide those involved in the delivery of major, novel or complex projects with the opportunity to widen and improve their skill in a more organised manner than has been previously available.

Figures from the Gateway Reviews undertaken during 2001 indicated that almost three quarters of the projects being reviewed showed a weakness in identifying the adequate skills and business resources for the project. The Successful Delivery Skills Programme aims to address this by providing a benchmark standard of delivery skills against which the potential project team members can be assessed before the start of the project.

Speaking at the launch in 23 September 2002, Sir Andrew Turnbull, cabinet secretary and head of the civil service said: 'It fits exactly within the framework the Prime Minister has set out for change and reform in the civil service and the public sector, and is a key part of the programme I am developing'.

Identifying Good Practice in the Use of Programme and Project Management in Policy Making

A cross-departmental project led by the Cabinet Office Strategy Unit and the Improving Programme and Project Delivery (IPPD) team within the Prime Minister's Office of Public Services Reform have examined good practice in Programme and Project Management (PPM) in the policy process. The final Improving programme and project delivery report was published in February 2003
