Sustainable transport and economic growth

On 30 October 2007, Department for Transport (DfT) published a report (Towards a sustainable transport system: supporting economic growth in a low carbon world) which identifies radical options for renewing Britain's roads and rail infrastructure, in the light of the Eddington transport study and the Stern review of the economics of climate change. It confirms the Government's commitment to a transport policy which delivers economic growth and lower carbon emissions. The report summarises the policy and investment plans over the period to 2014; and describes how the Government will implement a new approach to strategic transport planning for the period 2014-19 and beyond, including consideration of a high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham, motorway widening and more congestion charging as ways of spending her £20bn investment budget between 2014 and 2019.
